The Bakunawa
Origin: Ancient Visayas | Classification: Celestial Serpent | Status: Legendary
The Bakunawa is a colossal sea serpent believed to have been the cause of eclipses in ancient Philippine mythology. Legend tells of a creature so enamored by the beauty of the seven moons created by Bathala that it rose from the depths to consume them one by one. Only through the rhythmic beating of drums and the clanging of metal pans by the people below was the serpent startled into spitting the remaining moon back into the heavens.
Regional Variants
In Bicolano lore, it is often depicted as a dragon (Naga), while Higaonon tribes speak of a similar mountain dweller guarding the celestial gates.
Historical Sightings
Documented in 16th-century Spanish codices, rural communities still observe the 'Gimbal' ritual during lunar anomalies to appease the beast.
